Think before you speak. By using a word that has caused pain and harm to a specific group of people of which you are not a part, you are perpetuating the pain and harm to that specific group of people of which you are not a part.

Whoa, lady. I’ve checked my white privilege MULTIPLE times. As a third year Women’s Studies major, I’ve spent pretty much that entire time doing nothing BUT checking my white privilege. For you to assume that I’m just “some ally” speaks volumes about how vicious you’re being. I know my shit, and I never claimed to be black.

The fact of the matter is that, in our patriarchal white-dominated society, a definition of the word “nigger” has arisen, COMPLETELY SEPARATE FROM ANY RACIAL CONNOTATIONS. When the average person hears that word, they think multiple things, among them: (not always) of African descent, lower-income, uneducated, violent, crime-prone, general “troublemakers”, etc. Minus the racial aspect of it, YOU HAVE EVERY FUCKING PATRIARCH’S DEFINITION OF A FUCKING WOMAN.

Yes, it’s still a racist slur. No, I do not use it in my everyday vocabulary. Does that mean that I’m going to have a fucking shit fit if someone takes artistic license and uses it in a song? FUCK NO.

John Lennon took that term and flipped it. He was using the lens of racism to make clearer the general struggle between women and men. Let’s face it: in the 70’s, who wasn’t fucking acquainted with the notion of racism? It was pretty much the heart of the radical WOC movement. At the same time, however, not everybody was as aware of feminist struggles as they were with issues of racism. So, he took the common term (which was condoned by Bobby fucking Seale, but NO BIG DEAL) and used it to give a light to the uncommon problem.

Honestly, you’re complaining about a man who was being monitored by the FBI for having connections to the Black Panther Party. Have fun with that.

Woah. Did you really just tell someone with a completely valid critique about your bullshit response that you are exempt from critique for it because you are a women’s studies major? Women’s studies doesn’t emphasize race all the time, trust me. And wtf? All black people should be bowing down to John Lennon because he did a few things with the black panthers. Did you just fucking tell black women that, you silly white lady? Are you serious? And you checked your privilege? You actually make me more sick than the real overt racists who use the n word in the way it actually means and they know the way it has always been used. Song or not, it is racist.  It doesn’t matter how, ‘Artistically,’ it is being used.  Historically that word has been used by white people to oppress.  It is not something we defend.  If someone calls you out for being oppressive, it doesn’t matter that you think you’re not being oppressive, it matters that that person felt oppressed, and the minute that happens you should stop, and take a good look at your behaviour because you’re obviously doing something wrong.

FYC: It was racist when the song writer wrote it and it’s racist to quote it now.
